Frequently Asked Questions

The Wayfinders program is an affinity space for Black and Brown youth to build connections to nature and science from western and cultural frames. Activities are led by Camp Guides who reflect the community and youth we serve. The program includes trips and tours led by lived experts and professionals of color, and hands-on, nature-based activities.

  • Black and Brown Youth ages K - 8th Grade within the Portland Metro Area.

  • In-person Spring Break and Summer Camp. Find more info on upcoming sessions here.

  • Our group sizes for K - 2nd Grade is up to 10 youth for the week.

    Our group sizes for groups 3rd - 8th Grade are up to 12 youth for the week.

  • Wayfinders Summer Camp currently offers families up to 2 weeks of camps. This ensures that other youth have an opportunity to attend camp. If spots are available towards the end of registration, you can register for additional weeks.

  • Wayfinders uses a sliding scale based on the families income to determine each camper’s fee. The cost can range from $150 - $390 for a week of camp which includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, ELSO merch (water bottle, bag, t-shirt), and a Wayfinders Nature Journal.

  • Yes! We offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Please make sure to check the lunch box option on your registration form! We can accommodate food allergies/restrictions.

  • Our teaching approach at ELSO are designed to be flexible and welcoming to accommodate all brains and bodies. Our Camp Guides are trained on the following:

    • Trauma Informed Care

    • Implicit Bias

    • Microaggression

    • Stereotypes

    • Group Management

    • Mental Health

    • Disability Training

  • Yes, the ethnic or racial identity of parents are not relevant.
